The goal of our classes is to be able to pick up your instrument with intention, and play songs. Songs will be chosen by the student or class with guidance, and input from the instructor. Our classes includes everything you need to know to play your instrument for the rest of your life. 

Students will learn the basics of how to physically hold, play and speak about their instrument, as well as the fundamentals of music that are needed to communicate and play music with others. While learning their instruments, students will also develop a home practice routine that is fun, rewarding and efficient.

We also have more advanced classes for students that are looking to develop their musicianship on a deeper level. Please come in and we will evaluate your playing and place you with the appropriate group or instructor to help you meet your musical goals.

Private lessons are also available in 30 and 60 minute blocks.

Beginner Guitar and Ukulele

  • Tuning

  • The musical alphabet and how it relates to the fretboard

  • Strumming patterns (with and without a pick)

  • Fundamentals of rhythm, harmony and melody

Beginner Bass

  • Tuning

  • The musical alphabet and how it relates to the fretboard

  • Efficient changing between notes and proper technique

  • Right hand finger picking as well as using a pick

  • Fundamentals of rhythm, harmony and melody

  • Songs (THE REASON WE PLAY!)

  • “Fingerobics”

 

Beginner Keyboard/Piano

  • The musical alphabet and how it relates to the keyboard

  • Major and minor chords (how to play them and what they are)

  • Songs (THE REASON WE PLAY!)

  • Efficient changing between chords and proper technique

  • “Comping” patterns

  • Fundamentals of rhythm, harmony and melody

  • Exercises to build physical control over the instrument

Beginner Drums

  • Basic stick technique and proper posture

  • “The Essential 8” grooves

  • The hierarchy of notes (subdividing the beat)

  • Efficient changing between beats and proper technique

  • DRUM FILLS!!!

  • Songs (THE REASON WE PLAY!)

  • Exercises to build physical control over the instrument

Bands

What to do after “Beginner” Classes?
JOIN A BAND!!!

Some of the awesome bands at You Rock School of Music: 
Doughboys, Security Cats, Bicker, Rob Banks, Edgewood Dads Club, Lane 58, The Persisters, We, Lane 58, Syrup, Saints and Saviors, Captain’s Daughters, Stillhouse and many more.

The goal is to play music, and if you want to do that with other like-minded individuals, we have BANDS! Playing music with friends, in a band situation, is very rewarding, fun, educational.  Having goals, such as concerts or shows, helps the students to excel. Bands are for kids, teens and adults. Band members will learn:

  • The role of your instrument in a band

  • How to learn songs on your own

  • Songwriting techniques

  • Band rehearsal techniques

  • Performance techniques

  • How to set up and use the gear needed to rock

  • Performance experience

  • Communication and interpersonal skills

We want our students to be able to have a good understanding of the Beginner curriculum prior to joining a band. It makes the whole band work more efficiently, which is ultimately more fun. 

I’m an adult and I’ve been playing music on and off my whole life. I already know how to do most of the things in the Beginner Class, what can I do at You Rock School of Music?

We have bands for adults too! If you want to start jamming with other people in the same boat as you or brush up on your skills and to make music a bigger, more regular part of your life, please come in and we will place you with the right group!
